NUBI 3-Month Update

Posted on 2021-03-25 20:39:33 UTC

Hello everybody!

It's been a while since the soft launch and I thought I'd take a few minutes to let you know how things are progressing and what is in store for the future of NUBI.

So far the infrastructure is working well, and aside from a couple possible glitches in the reporter's client-side, reports are still coming in at a consistent rate and the website hasn't ground to a halt yet.

(Editor note: the glitches referred above should not be considered an issue with regards to the validity of the list, but rather handling errors in the reporter client when trying to submit IPs that shouldn't get submitted - things like private ranges, etc. - that the web API already disallowed.)

(Update 03/28: The reporter client glitch has been fixed. Further clarification has been added above.)

At the time of writing this article, there are currently ~770,000 total reports in the database, and some of these will start expiring tomorrow, and get purged from the database. At the same time, new reports will still be coming in, so I'm not really sure what our average running database size will be. Thankfully, even with a database of this size, we are still able to generate new lists every 5 minutes in under 1 second.

So where do we go from here? I have a few things in the pipeline but don't have a definite timeframe due to my current work schedule. Things like:

- Completing the news editor so I don't have to add articles to the database manually :)
- Deploying more internal reporters to the cloud
- Completing the reporter management control panel for users
- Releasing a Raspberry Pi image for users to send in their own reports
- DB maintenance work, possibly moving each service to their own table
- Making the website look better overall

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the current users who have been downloading the list for their own use. If you find the list useful, please feel free to share our website with your friends, colleagues and associates. In the future I might also open up a Patreon for donations. Any donations graciously provided will go towards expanding our pool of internal reporters.

Thank you for using NUBI and thank you for your patience.
